Hexa this is super cool. esp. the 1st half. the novelty wears off a little bit by the second half though with the composition/texture getting kinda same-y but the concept itself is still very neat. Favorite track: a speck of dust.

about

This album is a non-chronological survey of variations on a prayer, all based on a set of recordings of bass, electric and acoustic guitar, and voice. All original recordings were semi-improvisational interpretations of a tone row I composed, and as such they contain somewhat inter-connected forms, melodies, and harmonies. All the sounds you hear were created using these recordings.

My process in making the album was to create a series of adaptations of the original material, each adaptation venturing a little further from the root. I have arranged the tracks in a non-chronological way, so that listening through the album provides a constantly shifting perspective on the material, rather than a gradual descent towards chaos. It is my hope that in listening through the complete album, you will find themes and motifs, and maybe even recall more extreme adaptations when listening to the less altered tracks.

Speaking to the spirit of the album, and not just the process, it is an album of variations, and with each variation I was looking for something new within the original material. I consider that goal to be something similar to prayer, as I was continually seeking deeper meaning and the guidance that would lead to new ideas and atmospheres. And the album is certainly related to my experience living in Berkeley, CA, which has also consisted of repeated attempts to do something new with the same inputs. I did all the recording, production, and mixing in my apartment in Berkeley, where I also took the picture that became the album art.

Thank you for reading this description and for listening to this new work! Further detail on the process is available in the track details for each song, and the track listing with adaptation version is below.
